  • User Description: Chess, Go, and now-Minecraft. Artificial intelligence models have added a new victory to their gaming kill list. OpenAI, an artificial intelligence company, was able to train its neural network to play Minecraft using a mix of unlabeled Minecraft video clips and a small set of videos labeled with contractors. This is a major breakthrough for the technology that had previously struggled with the game's simple gameplay. Open AI engineers presented their experiment in a blog post and research paper. OpenAI's model can do much more than just survival and crafting. It can also perform many of same complex tasks as a human Minecraft gamer. OpenAI posted a video showing its model swimming, hunting and cooking animals. It even managed to master the "pillar jumping" technique. More recently, Deepmind was able to successfully train its MuZero AI to play Atari games. The past AI models have relied on reinforcement to beat classic games like Chess and Go. Minecraft on the other hand, though intuitive enough for young children to master, presents a challenge to AI systems due to its open world and open-ended structure. There are a lot of videos on the internet about Minecraft gameplay. But those videos only tell part of the story of how an AI learns how to play the game. According to OpenAI, the flurry of unlabeled video data excels at demonstrating "what" to do, but it doesn't provide exact key presses or mouse moments that are necessary for an AI to understand "how" to play. This was solved by the engineers creating a semi-supervised imitation training method they call Video PreTraining, or VPT. OpenAI was essentially able to gather a smaller dataset, which included Minecraft gameplay and key presses as well. OpenAI created another model using the videos of contractors to predict which action will be next in each stage of a Minecraft video. Equipped with the basic knowhow, their AI was then able to successfully understand larger datasets of Minecraft videos online. Instead of just pouring a flood of data on the AI, the engineers took time to teach it basic inputs. OpenAI wrote in their research paper, detailing their findings, that "our models perform well in many tasks." All that training and contractor assistance reportedly resulted in a price tag of about $160,000. According to ZDNet the bulk of that cash went to contractors who together assembled approximately 4,500 hours worth of gameplay. The hourly rate for contractors was $20. Below you will see some footage showing the AI cutting wood, managing inventory, and searching caves. If you don't think it's impressive to see an AI worth the annual salary for some surgeons playing an 11-year old indie game, it's worth taking the time to look back at how far the technology has come. Three years ago, teams made up of technologists were given a simple task: to create an AI capable of successfully mining a Minecraft diamond. This challenge was attempted by 660 contestants. Every one of them failed. OpenAI's model is now capable of crafting diamond tools. OpenAI isn’t the only tech company using Minecraft to test its AI ideas. Microsoft announced a new AI Minecraft agent last month during its Build conference. It works within Minecraft. Welcome To My Blog Users can interact with Microsoft Minecraft agents by typing commands that are then generated automatically using the game’s software API. Wired notes that this means that users can type in phrases like "come here" into the Minecraft bot and it will translate that into Minecraft code. The bot then moves forward. Microsoft's Minecraft agent is capable of performing more complicated tasks than simply walking. For example, it can retrieve items from the game and combine them to make something. You can see that it can probably do that faster than this writer, who is many years removed from his last Minecraft session.
